The Albany Hills school in Queensland Australia were suffering from a problem very common with new public multi-purpose developments; the only purpose they dont work well for is for performing arts. For that matter, they also dont work well even for spoken word announcements. This problem is compounded by an unsuitable sound system (generally added at the cheapest price at the end of the building process).
A big room that needs to cover many purposes
At Albany Hills the school decided they wanted a multiple purpose venue that worked for every purpose. The school often rents out the venue for local public events so this makes the need for a good sound system even more important to help generate revenue for the school.
Albany Hills multi purpose venue
Brisbane music and audio technology company Music Lab were invited to design a solution that accommodated the difficult building acoustics and a budget. Also the system needed to be operated by non audio personnel without difficulties. With their experience of difficult acoustic environments, Music Lab selected a Quest HPI system for the job.
HPi110 on delay throws to the back of the room
The final installed system consisted of four HPI-110 speakers, two HPI218 sub bass and Quest QA series amplifiers controlled a pre set iPad controlled pre set mixing system. The physical size of the system seems small when compared to the space it needs to cover but the results speak for themselves. the venue can accommodate 700 people seated when configured for live performance and there is uniform and intelligible coverage to the back row.
The point source array delivers good coverage in wide and far field
This seems extraordinary considering the large space to be covered but the HPI system achieves this without stressing the system.
Also the venue received some acoustic treatment on the upper walls and the ceiling. The combination of right audio system and preparation of the room acoustics means a system that will be viable for many years to come.
